Cannabis tax calculator
An estimate. The rate is the same in all five boroughs and across New York State. Discounts usually come off before tax.
How the 13% breaks down
| Tax | Rate | Who gets it |
|---|---|---|
| State cannabis tax | 9% | New York State |
| Local cannabis tax | 4% | New York City |
| Sales tax | 0% | Adult-use cannabis is exempt |
| Total at the register | 13% |
The rate is the same in every borough and in every licensed shop in the state, so the shelf price is the number to compare.
What happened to the THC tax
New York used to charge distributors a tax based on how much THC a product held. That potency tax ended for sales on and after June 1, 2024. It was replaced by a 9% tax that distributors pay when they sell to shops.
You do not pay that 9% at the register. It is built into the price the shop pays, the same way other costs are.
Medical patients
Medical cannabis is not part of the 13% adult-use tax. A 3.15% tax is paid by the registered medical company, and it cannot be shown as a separate charge on the patient's receipt.
How to pay less
- Ask about first-time customer offers. Discounts come off before tax.
- Compare shelf prices. The tax is the same everywhere, so the shelf price decides it.
- Compare price per gram. Bigger sizes often cost less per gram.
- Join the loyalty program at the shop you visit most.
